Real talk: what surprised me most about Colombian culture

Toronto-Colombia transition observations after 8 months:

  1. People remember you. The barista, the doorman, the corner store owner — they remember your name, your face, what you ordered last time. After Toronto-anonymous-by-default this floored me.
  2. Family is centered differently. In Canada my friends complain about Sunday calls with parents. Here, Sunday IS at parents'. Whole-family. Multi-generational. Every week.
  3. Time means something else. "Ahorita" is a feeling, not a measurement.
  4. Things will work out. And they do. Usually. Eventually.

"Ahorita is a feeling" should be on a t-shirt.

10 years here and the time thing still confuses my British brain.
